Fitting It In

By Victoria Blisse

So what do you think this blog is going to be about?

Really?

Wow, you’ve got dirty minds! I’m going to keep it clean, well relatively clean, I do write erotic romance! When I talk about fitting it in, I mean writing. As with many authors the book writing stuff is not my full time job. I have a lot of other things to do in my day.

I am luckier than some in that I am a housewife which means I am not out of the house for several hours each day, however that doesn’t necessarily mean I have time enough to sit down and use the computer more. I have the house to keep clean, food to cook and of course I need to buy the ingredients that later make the meals and all that kind of stuff.

I have other responsibilities. I’m part of the church council, a school governor, a friend and a wife and mother and all those responsibilities have to fit in with my writing schedule.

So how do I fit it in? Well, with difficulty is the answer to that one. Most days I wake up early, around 5.30am and I come down to my computer and write. Okay, okay, I confess to checking my email first, maybe putting up a twitter tweet and a status at facebook but I do tend to get an hour or two to write in the morning before my daughter and husband wake up. This is generally my only fiction writing time of the day. I just can’t manage it in an evening unless a deadline calls and I have to push myself. So even a very short story can take a few days to a week to write!

Now, as you know, being an author isn’t just about the writing. We’ve got to do all the other stuff too. The blogging, the chatting, the yahoo group visiting and social media using which is generally quite fun but sometimes takes up a lot of time and the *gulps* dreaded editing that just has to be done.

All this takes place in bits and bats throughout the day. Little ten minutes here during the day and maybe a little longer in the evening once the child is in bed. I literally squeeze it in whenever I have a spare second.

A Note from Victoria: If I don’t answer immediately, please cut me some slack. I am probably busy wearing one of my other hats for a while! So, how many hats do you wear and how do you manage to juggle all the things you need to do in a day? Yes, I am looking for hints and tips! I’d love to see your comments here!

  1. Hi Victoria! I'm Diane and also a mother/author. I work out of the home as I am the sole support of my kids. Finding time can be really challenging. The time to edit even more so. Nights are not my best writing time however I open the laptop while keeping an ear on kids and give it a go. Some nights are more successful than others. The other time I have to write is when they visit their father. he backs out a lot though so that's not something I can count on. I think like you I fit it in the best I can just because I love it too much to quit! I enjoyed your blog entry quite a lot, good luck on your writing endeavors!

  2. Hi Diane thanks for chiming in, I'm glad it's not just me who fits it in as and when I can. It is definitely a driving need in me that keeps me writing. If I didn't need to let all the characters and plotlines out I'm sure I'd spend my spare time doing something else instead!
